Success and Fulfillment

MILLENNIAL BURNOUT ... AN UNEXAMINED LIFE, JUST LIKE AN UNEXAMINED BUSINESS, GOES NOWHERE ...

"Baby boomers' "intensive," hands-on approach to parenting — still widely practiced today, per The Atlantic — could be the reason why so many millennials report feeling burned out. Anne Helen Petersen, author of "Can't Even: How Millennials Became the Burnout Generation," blames millennials' difficulties on being raised as "mini-adults" who advocated for themselves and engaged in conversation with adults other than their parents. She also faults boomer parents for overly focusing on college as an ultimate goal rather than letting their kids be kids."

BUT, MAYBE THERE IS ANOTHER REASON MILLENNIALS FEEL BURNOUT ... MAYBE THEY ARE FOCUSING TOO MUCH ON BEING SUCCESSFUL ... AND NOT ENOUGH ON BEING FULFILLED ...

Many seek to be SUCCESSFUL ... Not nearly as many seek FULFILLMENT. People that seek FULFILLMENT in their lives know who they are, where they are going, how they want to live their life, and they are acting on it. Living a life that is focused predominantly on SUCCESS without also focusing on FULFILLMENT will bring with it a sense of depression that manifests itself in various negative behaviors. I've worked with several clients to help them formulate and act on a plan to achieve both SUCCESS and FULFILLMENT and they are totally different in nature than those that focus exclusively on SUCCESS. Those that seek only SUCCESS in their lives are on a path to BURNOUT.

Those that seek both SUCCESS and FULFILLMENT clearly understand what is important in their life. They clearly identify and prioritize their ...

1. BELIEFS about the world - e.g., identifying and leveraging personal strengths and other's strengths will net more effective outcomes.

2. VALUES ... the things they cherish most in their life - e.g., the relationship they have with their immediate family members.

3. ATTITUDES ... how they want to behave in their interactions with others - e.g., to focus on learning and applying what is learned from mistakes - not on punishing myself and others for making mistakes.

They assess their current state on each of the three above and they identify where they want to be in 1-year, 2-years, and 3-years. They identify and implement actions to achieve their 1-year plan. They know who they are ... where they want to go ... and how they want to live their life. They also regularly engage in self-examination to identify what they want to stop doing, start doing, accelerate doing, and accept doing ... while remaining open to new opportunities.
